The Water Keeper by Charles Martin

The Water KeeperThe Water Keeper by Charles Martin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“We don’t love because people love us back. We love because we can. Because we were made to. Because it is all we have because, at the end of the day, evil can take everything save one thing : your love.”

Once again Charles Martin has written my favorite summer read of the summer. His stories contain imperfect characters who are in need of being saved: from grief, from dangerous circumstances, from their past, and from evil. “The Water Keeper” contains romance, adventure, drama, and an escape into the beautiful and interesting waterways of the east coast of Florida and the Keys.

Murphy is the main character and narrator and the book begins with the knowledge that he has lost people close to him. He is a recluse living on a small island off the northeast coast of Florida. Quickly into the story the reader will sense that Murphy is complex and perhaps a hero in the story and we embark on an adventure that leads us through the world of slave trafficking young girls with Murphy striving to safe them. Joined with a mother of one of the girls, a dog, and an rough elderly man they frantically attempt a life saving mission. If you’ve never read Charles Martin’s books before I can promise you that you won’t be disappointed. His good versus evil plots are dependable , he keeps you engaged without including graphic details you might otherwise expect, and the depth of character story and lyrical touches might touch your heart. Great escape for a summer read - most of the action occurs on the Florida coast with a little history of the are thrown in. A book I didn’t want to be finished.
